This Welsh griffin, Y Ddraig Goch (The Red Dragon) is used on the Flag of Wales. There are many Griffin coat of arms in European heraldy. The name Griffin is derived from the Welsh word "Griffinus," which means "strong chief." The griffin, also called gryphen, griffen, and gryphin, is a mythological creature with the body of a lion and the head of an eagle. It also may be depicted with the wings of an eagle. Griffins are the guardians of treasure and appear in many cultures, Greece, Central Asia, Egypt to name a few.

Griffin mythology could have its roots with ancient humans finding of the bones of the Protoceratops dinosaur which looks remarkedly like a griffin.
