The Pieridae family of Lepidoptera butterflies contain approximately 1,100 mostly tropical species within Africa and Asia. Usually these butterflies are white, yellow or orange in color with black spots.

Some of the butterflies in the pieridae family are considered to be agricultural pests, such as the Alfalfa butterfly and the small white Cabbage butterfly.

Pieridae have four subfamilies:

  • Dismorphiinae - Mostly Neotropical
  • Pierinae - Whites, Yellow, Orange-tips
  • Coliadinae - Sulphurs or Yellows
  • Pseudopontiinae - Dwelling in West Africa
