Folk Art Leaves and Foliage

Folk art paintings, stitchery and decorations commonly include some type of lush plants, trees or foliage to complete or fill the landscape. In peasant art, trees can be depicted as simply as stick figures for pines and fir branches or ornate and finely detailed. Foliage may also include ripe fruit and vegetables.

With most peasant or folk art, species of tree and foliage usually matches the type of tree most commonly grown in the geographic region in which the artist lives or is most familiar. Breadfruit leaves appear in Hawaiian island snowflake quilt designs, apple trees appear in in Washington statefolk art, and spruce pineapple galls appear in ppeasant art in Norway.
